A man who was born at the Fairfield Hospital in Bury more than 20 years ago has now received a total of £3.35 million in birth injury compensation from the NHS.
Adam Spinks, now 24, was born at the hospital in December 1986 but during his birth, his family say hospital staff made mistakes which led to him being starved of oxygen. It is also claimed that these errors led to Mr Spinks becoming brain damaged, and developing cerebral palsy in later life.
Following a lengthy case, with legal proceedings first being launched in 2007, the North West Strategic Health Authority has finally agreed to pay Mr Spinks a total of £3.35 million in personal injury compensation. However, it has not accepted full liability for Mr Spinks’ condition, and the amount in compensation is believed to be 50 per cent of his total claim.
Commenting on the settlement, Mr Spinks’ mother Jaqueline has said:
“The past 24 years have been incredibly difficult for the family and we have some tough times ahead, but to know that we have the means to be able to support Adam is an immense relief.”
