A man who was left with brain injuries following the MMR vaccine has been awarded injury compensation.
The man, who received the injection when he was 13 months old has received £90,000 in a landmark ruling. He is now 18, but since having the injection he has suffered epileptic fits and incontinence. He is also unable to stand, talk or feed himself.
This case has always been controversial because the Department of Health had denied that there was a link between the injection and the victim’s condition. But since then, a medical assessment panel has ruled that the victim became disabled as a result of the injection.
As a result of this ruling, it has been suggested that other families who believe that their children have been affected by the injection may come forward to make a compensation claim.
Dr Robin Moffat, president of the Medico-Legal Society said:
‘Today, everyone is money-conscious, and if a doctor makes a mistake they are all looking for compensation, and many of them get it.’
The victim in question has to have round the clock care from his parents and they have been trying to succeed in their compensation claim for the last 13 years.
